Data SecurityFirst off, I appreciate the clean & ease of the user interface and the reporting has a great layout ... Nice Job! Can you tell me where the data is stored, if it is secure and who has access to it? Is it shared with anyone?

Data security: response
Hi Anonymous,
Thanks - appreciation for your kind words!
The data is stored on a server which I alone have control over.
It is secure in that by design only the account holder of a TimeGadget account can access his own data.
There is no encryption at present however. In 99.999% of cases this should not be a cause for concern. And even with encryption there would always be a chance of your data being compromised. If you are concerned that someone has the intention of hacking to get your data, you have real problems because in reality almost anything can be hacked one way or another - between technical and social techniques.
I cannot guarantee the safety of your data. Although obviously I have confidence that under most circumstances the security of TimeGadget is perfectly adequate. TimeGadget's security is designed to deter opportunistic hackers, but deterring a determined professional hacker is another matter entirely.
Some very general advice is:
- Don't use internet cafes
- Change passwords and encryption keys regularly
- Make sure you use the strongest possible encryption when using WiFi (128 bits or greater)
- Don't use windows - instead use linux, unix, MacOS or just about any other OS.
- Use a firewall, and if using windows, a commercial antivirus package such as AVG professional.
- Avoid using internet applications when desktop applications will suffice
- Use strong passwords, with upper case, lowercase, numerals and punctuation and no words or names.
- Lock your PC while not in front of it
- Don't give anyone half a chance to install anything on your PC. All you need is someone to run a password sniffer and they will have access to every single keystroke you make - including passwords.
- Take out insurance in case your measures were unsuccessful.
- Do your sensitive work on a PC that has no network connection or internet connection.
- Get professional advice to address your unique requirements and concerns
I'm sorry for the vague and preachy response but if you're very concerned about data security or know that someone is specifically after your data then TimeGadget probably isn't right for you as it's a tool designed for convenience over security.
Good luck with your operations! If I can be of more help, do get in touch.
All the best
Jody
